    Thanks to Mindy

As shown in "The Incident, Part 2" episode 5x17, Ben is jealous of Locke's favor with Jacob. Ben tells Locke that he has never actually seen Jacob and then tells Jacob that he felt ignored during his 35 years of service to the island. "But when HE [Locke] asks to see you", Ben says to Jacob, "he gets marched straight up here as if he was Moses. So, why him? What was it that was so wrong with me"?

Thanks to Mindy for the heads up.

This mystery was answered definitively in the Official Lost Audio Podcast from April 9th, 2009. According to Damon and Carleton, anything touched by those experiencing a time flash (e.g. the raft, the compass) travels through time with the people flashing. NB: They did note that these rules may not be applicable to donkey-wheel initiated flashes (e.g. when Locke reset the wheel and everyone flashed to the 1970's).

Thanks to GregDean for the following.

In "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", Charles Widmore reveals to John Locke that he was once the leader of The Others (who he refers to as "my people"), who protected the Island for over three decades, before Ben tricked him into turning the Frozen Donkey Wheel, and into being forced off the Island. At that point, Ben took over leadership of the Others, and the Island stopped being Widmore's.

As seen in episode 5x06 "316" Eloise Hawking said that they needed a proxy, in other words, in order for Jack and the others to return they must recreate the exact circumstances they were first in when they first crashed onto the island. Therefore, the new Christian is Locke.
