This is from the official LOST site on abc.com. If you go to episode recaps and click on Incident Pt. 1 you'll find this:
"And as the camera pulls back, we see what we've been waiting to see since we first glimpsed that four-toed foot over three years ago... the towering, majestic statue of the Egyptian goddess Taweret."

As shown in "The Incident, Part 2" episode 5x17, Ben is jealous of Locke's favor with Jacob. Ben tells Locke that he has never actually seen Jacob and then tells Jacob that he felt ignored during his 35 years of service to the island. "But when HE [Locke] asks to see you", Ben says to Jacob, "he gets marched straight up here as if he was Moses. So, why him? What was it that was so wrong with me"?

This has since been answered - Dharma dug into the patch of energy, forcing it to need to be controlled. It was just sitting there before, undisturbed underneath the island.
