In the Official Lost Audio Podcast from April 23, 2009, Damon and Carlton explain that Daniel's girlfriend, Teresa, was put into a "vegetative state" as a result of Daniel conducting experiments on her in his laboratory in Oxford (time stamp 18:36).

As seen in "Because You Left", Daniel and the other people on the Zodiac (which retroactively includes Frogurt) were close enough to the radius of the Island (Daniel says this) to have come along with the Island when it moved, and they then join the rest of the Losties on the beach.
