Darlton confirmed in the LOST: A Journey in Time, that since they did not recreate the conditions of the original flight, the results were unpredictable.

Thanks to GregDean for the following.
As he explains to John Locke in "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", Matthew Abaddon was a man who worked for Charles Widmore, helping make sure that people who were supposed to get to the Island, got to the Island. He made sure John Locke went to Australia for his walkabout, made sure the Freighter Four were led by Naomi, and assisted John Locke in his efforts to reunite and return the Oceanic Six.
Why does the island require everyone to come back?

Thanks to razzle dazzle
As seen in Episode 5x06 "316", the exact circumstances of the first crash must occur again in order for Jack and the rest to return to the island, meaning that it has to be Jack(instead of taking his father's coffin, it's Locke's coffin), Kate, Sun, Hurley(now carrying a similar instrument as Charlie, becoming the new Charlie), and Sayid(who is being guarded by a marshal, similar to Kate in the first crash)
Why does Locke have to die for the Oceanic 6 to return to the island?

Thanks to razzle dazzle
As seen in episode 5x06 "316" Eloise Hawking said that they needed a proxy, in other words, in order for Jack and the others to return they must recreate the exact circumstances they were first in when they first crashed onto the island. Therefore, the new Christian is Locke.

Thanks to GregDean
We know that the Aaron cover up is part of "The Lie" of the Oceanic Six, to cover up the existence of the Island, and the people, like Claire, who are still on it.
