    The orientations films has confirmed that the purpose was to create "a large-scale communal research compound where scientists and free-thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and Utopian social-[static]."

    But also the barracks video said that the mission was to study its unique properties.

    We learned in Dead is Dead, he was banished from the island for allegedly having a daughter with an outsider. Ben seemed to be leading the fight to get him off.

    We learned in Dead is Dead, Widmore wasn't really "fooled"- he was banished from the island for breaking the rules- having a child with an outsider.

    As seen at the end of "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", Ben returned to the Island along with the other passengers of Ajira Flight 316 who were not members of the Oceanic Six (along with John Locke and Frank Lapidus).

    What is Matthew Abbadon's relationship to Jacob and/or the island?

    Although we do not know of any relationship to Jacob, as seen in "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", Matthew Abaddon's role in the battle for the Island is as a man who works for Charles Widmore, making sure that people who are supposed to be on the Island, get to the Island.

    As seen in Episode 5x06 "316", the exact circumstances of the first crash must occur again in order for Jack and the rest to return to the island, meaning that it has to be Jack(instead of taking his father's coffin, it's Locke's coffin), Kate, Sun, Hurley(now carrying a similar instrument as Charlie, becoming the new Charlie), and Sayid(who is being guarded by a marshal, similar to Kate in the first crash)

    As we found out in The Constant the sickness relates to the side-effects of the Island and shifting consciousness between timelines as was demonstrated by Minkowski dying.

    Why does Daniel warn Frank to take the exact same bearing out as they used when they arrived on the Island?

    As explained in "The Constant", there is a phenomenon that happens to people who come near the Island who have been exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism. In Desmond's case, it was electromagnetism from the Swan station imploding. For Minkowski, it was radiation from his communication station. For Daniel Faraday, it was from doing all those experiments on Eloise without wearing his protective gear over his head.

    In "The Constant", Penny tells Desmond that she knows about the Island, and has been looking for him for three years. So, the "IT" is confirmed to be the Island.
